In July 2023, MTN Uganda became the first telecom operator in Uganda to launch 5G connectivity, marking a pivotal moment in the nation's technological advancement. Since then, the company has diligently expanded its 5G coverage, deploying over 35 sites across Kampala, Uganda's capital city.

To further augment the benefits of 5G, MTN Uganda has also undertaken a parallel initiative to roll out and optimize 4G+ technology throughout the country. This strategic approach ensures that Ugandans across the nation have access to enhanced data speeds, improved capacity, and reduced latency, regardless of their location.


The combined deployment of 5G and 4G+ technologies holds immense promise for revolutionizing various industries, including healthcare, education, manufacturing, and transportation. Faster internet speeds will enable seamless video conferencing for remote medical consultations, enhance online learning experiences, streamline manufacturing processes, and facilitate the development of intelligent transportation systems.


Sylvia Mulinge, the Chief Executive Officer at MTN Uganda, underscores the significance of these technological advancements, stating: "Our investment in 5G and 4G+ technologies is a testament to our commitment to supporting individual and government efforts to drive progress in our communities and country. We are dedicated to bridging the digital divide and ensuring that Ugandans have access to the latest connectivity advancements."


MTN Uganda's 5G rollout has strategically focused on key urban and commercial hubs, including the central business district of Kampala and its surrounding areas. The company has also activated 5G in the cities of Fort Portal and Kasese, demonstrating its commitment to extending the benefits of 5G beyond the capital city.


The rollout of 5G and 4G+ technologies is not limited to urban centers; MTN Uganda is committed to expanding its network coverage to rural areas as well. Ali Monzer, MTN Uganda's Chief Technical and Information Officer (CTIO), emphasizes the company's continuous efforts to bridge the digital divide: "Our network optimization efforts, including the rollout of 4G+ and 5G technologies, are driven by our commitment to providing Ugandans with access to the numerous benefits of today's modern connected world."
